Saint Lambert of Maastricht

Saint Lambert was a Martyr and a Bishop of Maestricht, Belguim. He was between 633 and 638. He died at Liege between 698 and 701.

Bishop, martyr, and patron of St. Willibrord’s missions. He was the son of a noble family of Maastricht, Flanders, Belgium, educated by St. Theodard and succeeding him as bishop of Tongres-Maastricht in 668 when Theodard was murdered. He was driven from his see by Ebroin, the tyrannical mayor of the royal palace, and lived as a Benedictine in Stavelot until 681, when he was reinstated.

When Lambert defended the sanctity of marriage and denounced the Mayor of the Palace Pepin of Heristal for adultery, he was murdered, stabbed through the heart by a javelin at the chapel of Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian while celebrating Mass in Liege, Belgium.

He was buried in his family’s vault in the cemetery of Saint Peter, Maestricht. His remains was exhumed and translated to Liège at around 720 by Saint Hubert, the first Bishop of Liège

Saint Lambert’s feast is September 17.

Reliquary of Saint Lambert

reliquairestlambert

Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Liege, Belgium houses today the Treasury of Saint-Lambert’s Cathedral. Saint Paul’s has undergone various refurbishments and reconstructions since it was first built in around 1230. The last addition was an additional floor in the tower in the 19th century which is an imitation of that of Saint-Lambert. The Treasury in the 15th century cloisters houses many treasures including the famous bust-reliquary of Saint-Lambert (around 1512). Its collections of textiles (shroud of Saint-Lambert, liturgical ornaments) are remarkable. The Treasury suggests an art and history route on the ancient Episcopal Principality of Liège.
